Plan Kasuga Taisha around the visit you want
Kasuga Taisha is a shrine, and the first planning choice is whether you want general worship, special worship, the museum or the Manyo Garden. Treat these as separate visits with their own access arrangements. A walk through the wider shrine setting and a visit inside a paid area are different commitments, so decide which matters to you before filling the rest of the day.
The shrine is one component of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara, inscribed in 1998. That connection makes it a useful companion to a Buddhist temple rather than a substitute for one. Read the history guide for the larger context and use the city sights page to choose what else belongs in your day.

General worship and special worship are separate
General worship is free. Published hours are 06:30 to 17:30 from March to October and 07:00 to 17:00 from November to February. Special worship has its own 09:00 to 16:00 hours and costs 700 JPY. An early arrival during general worship hours therefore should be planned as a general shrine visit, with any special-area entry fitted to its later opening.
Rituals can suspend special worship even while the wider shrine remains accessible. Published full-day exceptions include approximately 8 to 13 March, 20 December to 7 January and the Coming-of-Age Day. Additional mornings and the afternoon of 16 December also have exceptions. Consult the shrine’s daily arrangements for a visit that depends on the special area; leave space elsewhere in the itinerary rather than tying every stop to an uninterrupted opening.

A guided walk including Kasuga special worship
This three-hour route pairs the Kasuga special worship area with Todai-ji Great Buddha Hall admission and cultural explanation.
Museum and Manyo Garden
The museum opens from 10:00 to 17:00, with admission until 16:30. Regular fees are 700 JPY for adults, 400 JPY for university and high-school students, and 300 JPY for junior-high and elementary-school pupils. Special exhibitions can use different fees. Decide whether a museum visit is your main indoor stop rather than squeezing it into the final minutes of a shrine walk.
The Manyo Garden opens from 09:00 to 16:30, with admission until 16:00. Adults pay 700 JPY and children through junior-high school pay 300 JPY. From June to March it closes on Tuesdays except national days off; April and May have no regular weekly closure. A garden plan needs this calendar as well as the shrine’s worship hours. For a separate city garden outing, see Isuien and Yoshikien.
Lanterns and the dated autumn evenings
The autumn 2026 evening visits take place on 7, 14, 21 and 28 November only. Hours are 17:30 to 20:00, with reception ending at 19:45, and admission is 700 JPY. The daytime visit first closes at 17:00. Plan a break between the daytime closure and evening reopening rather than treating this as one continuously extended visit. The series ends on 28 November 2026.
The recurring Chugen Mantoro calendar lists 14 and 15 August, lantern lighting around 19:00 and planned closing at 21:30. This seasonal tradition is a different subject from the November series. For later-year planning, use the seasonal guide and the event calendar for the year of travel. A normal daytime shrine visit should stand on its own without depending on an evening event.
A guided route with the special area included
The three-hour guided walk selected here includes a trained local guide in the language chosen at booking, questions about culture and religion, Todai-ji Great Buddha Hall admission, the Kasuga special worship area and deer crackers. Transport to the meeting point, hotel pickup, meals and drinks are extra. Two meeting locations apply according to option; use the address attached to the selected departure.
A route through the park also calls for care around wild deer. Do not chase or touch them, supervise children and feed only shika-senbei rather than ordinary food. Follow local signs and keep paper and bags secure. At the shrine, respect worshippers and the central approach, and obey local photography restrictions. The arrival guide explains the separate JR and Kintetsu stations, while walking tours helps compare broader city routes.
