Make Kofuku Ji a temple-hall visit

Kofuku Ji belongs to the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara, the World Heritage property inscribed in 1998. For a visit now, focus on its halls and collection rather than building the day around the familiar pagoda view. The pagoda is covered by a protective structure during restoration, so its exterior is not visible. A temple visit still has a clear purpose when the halls, rather than that photograph, determine your priorities.

The walk from Kintetsu Nara takes about five minutes. This makes the temple a practical opening stop for someone arriving at that station, but JR Nara is a separate arrival point. Read the transport guide before fixing a meeting location. Give the temple time of its own rather than treating proximity to the station as a reason to rush through it.

Choose the collection and halls separately

The National Treasure Hall, Tokondo and Chukondo are distinct visiting choices. Think about whether you want to spend longer with the collection or concentrate on temple architecture. Keeping those choices explicit helps you budget time and cash, especially when a seasonal special area adds a further admission decision. Do not use an ordinary hall visit as shorthand for entry into every area of the temple.

The published regular opening window is 09:00 to 17:00. Arrive well before closing for a paid visit, and take cash: the prefectural tourism information lists cash payment. In November 2026, the rear Tokondo special area has an additional charge, so arrange your budget around the areas open on the day. The history and architecture guide explains how the temple fits the former capital.

How to read the regular admission figures

The regular National Treasure Hall fee is 900 JPY for adults and university students, 800 JPY for junior-high and high-school students, and 500 JPY for elementary-school pupils. Regular Tokondo and Chukondo fees are each 500, 300 and 200 JPY for those respective categories. These are regular reference fees, not a complete November 2026 visit price. The additional rear-area opening must be treated separately.

Choose a smaller number of areas if close observation matters more than covering every hall. A collection visit and a walk around religious buildings ask for different kinds of attention. Pause to read the information available at each entrance, respect the designated route and leave room for worshippers. Avoid making a late arrival depend on fitting several separately entered spaces into the remaining time.

Autumn evening opening ends on 28 November 2026

The announced Tokondo evening dates are 31 October and 7, 14, 21 and 28 November 2026. Opening is 17:30 to 21:00, with last admission at 20:45. Evening admission costs 500 JPY for adults and university students, 300 JPY for junior-high and high-school students, and 200 JPY for elementary-school pupils; preschool children enter free. The rear special area costs the same amount again. Normal evening visits in this series require no reservation.

This programme ends on 28 November 2026. Keep it separate from a regular daytime visit and from later-year expectations. If your day centres on an evening visit, use the daytime for a contrasting subject such as Naramachi merchant houses, then return with time to spare. The seasonal guide places the November events alongside the broader seasonal choices.

Guiding, architecture and a respectful route

The selected three-hour personalised private walk starts at Kintetsu Nara Station, Higashimuki Nakamachi 29. It includes guiding and local recommendations, with Kofuku-ji among the heritage-route stops. Budget separately for hall admissions. This format suits someone who wants connections between the city’s religious places and a conversation about what they see, without treating a walking guide as a ticket for every building.

Kofuku-ji is a Buddhist temple. Follow local photography restrictions, do not step on thresholds and avoid interrupting prayer. For a different religious setting, continue your planning with Kasuga Taisha, a shrine with separate general and special worship arrangements. If you want to compare the walking formats before choosing, the city walking guide explains their starts and included admissions.

Questions about your visit

Can I see the pagoda exterior?

The pagoda is behind a protective structure during restoration. Plan around the halls and collection rather than an unobstructed pagoda view.

Which station is closest in this guide?

Kintetsu Nara is about five minutes away on foot. JR Nara is a different station, so use the correct arrival point.

Are the rear Tokondo area and evening entry one fee?

The autumn 2026 evening visit and the rear special area have separate charges. The evening series ends on 28 November 2026.
