Mount Wakakusa on foot or by road
Mount Wakakusa rises to 342 metres and offers a different sort of visit from Nara’s garden and temple stops. The main planning decision is how you approach it: through the pedestrian gates at the foot, or by the road towards the summit parking area. These approaches have different access arrangements. Choose between them before deciding where the hill fits among the other places you want to see.
The north and south pedestrian gates are about 300 metres apart. The published opening season runs from the third Saturday in March to the second Sunday in December, with gates open from 09:00 to 17:00. Applying that calendar rule to 2026 gives 21 March to 13 December. This is a calendar interpretation of the published seasonal rule, so keep the general rule in mind when planning another year.

Reaching the foot and paying admission
From Kintetsu-Nara, the walk to the foot is approximately thirty minutes. The prefecture also describes access by bus to Todaiji Daibutsuden/Kasuga Taisha-mae or Kasuga Taisha Omotesando, followed by about fifteen minutes on foot. Use the Nara transport guide to distinguish Kintetsu-Nara from JR Nara before choosing your onward route. Match the approach to your arrival station rather than treating both stations as the same place.
Published mountain admission is 150 JPY from junior high school age and 80 JPY for children from age three until junior high school. Keep this entrance arrangement distinct from transport to the hill. If you plan to walk, allow room for the return within the gate hours instead of making the ascent the last tightly scheduled activity of your day.

Mount Wakakusa hilltop bus
Reach the summit area from JR Nara or Kintetsu-Nara with a return fare and walking map. Choose the boarding plan for your arrival station.
The hilltop bus from Nara stations
The hilltop bus offers boarding plans at JR Nara and Kintetsu-Nara. Its included services are the return fare and a Mount Wakakusa walking map; a local bus ticket is included for passengers disembarking locally. This makes it a transport option for a visit centred on the summit area. Mountain admission should be budgeted separately from those transport inclusions.
Choose the boarding location that matches your rail arrival and use the departure details for that plan. A road journey changes how you reach the upper area, but you should still plan the walking part according to access notices and your own comfort. For visits focused on the city instead, the Nara tour comparison sets out other formats.
Road hours, daylight and sunset planning
The summit parking area is reached by a toll road; the prefecture gives a walk of about five minutes from the car park. Its access information dated 11 September 2026 lists road passage from 05:00 to 23:00 and describes the summit car park as free. Road access and pedestrian gate access are separate arrangements. The road hours do not extend the pedestrian gates beyond their published daytime opening.
If sunset is your interest, start with the permitted access hours for your chosen approach and the light on your travel date. Leave enough time for the return. Keep to permitted routes and stay outside fenced areas; fires and fireworks are prohibited. A landscape visit works better with a clear return plan than with a late decision to continue through a closed gate.
Yamayaki on 23 January 2027
The next published Yamayaki date is 23 January 2027, with fireworks scheduled for 18:15 and ignition for 18:30. These event details apply to that date and end on 23 January 2027. Organise an event visit separately from a normal seasonal hill walk. Admission requirements depend on the spectator area, so consult the current event information when selecting where to watch.
Heavy rain or snow, wind and official directions can lead to cancellation. The organiser’s stated policy is cancellation without postponement. For ordinary walks, use the Nara climate guide as preparation and the seasonal guide for the wider city visit. Climate averages help choose clothing; conditions on your actual day should guide how ambitious your outdoor plan becomes.
