Walk Naramachi with houses in mind
Naramachi is a former merchant district where houses are used for museums, shops, cafés and Japanese sweets. It offers a different way into Nara from a day devoted entirely to temple halls. Look at how buildings meet the street and leave room for a house visit, a collection or a café break rather than making every doorway another scheduled stop.
The area around Gango-ji is about ten minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara, while Sarusawa Pond is about five minutes from that station. These are useful orientation points, not a total walking time for the whole district. Use the arrival guide for the distinction between Kintetsu and JR Nara, and the history page for the difference between the ancient capital and later merchant-house architecture.

Koshi-no-ie: a reconstructed machiya
Koshi-no-ie reconstructs a traditional machiya: a narrow frontage leads into a deep building, with a lattice facade, passage kitchen, courtyard and storehouse. Read the house as an explanation of domestic space. Its layout is the reason to visit; it should not be described as an unchanged house from the Nara capital period. Moving from the frontage towards the inner spaces provides a useful focus for close observation.
Admission is free and opening hours are 09:00 to 17:00. The city’s notice of 1 March 2025 lists Monday closure, moving to the following day when Monday is a national day off. It also normally closes after national days off unless the following day is Saturday, Sunday or a national day off, and closes from 26 December to 5 January. There is no car park. The walk takes about twenty minutes from Kintetsu Nara or ten minutes from JR Kyobate.

A Naramachi walk with Gango-ji admission
Follow a district route through Sarusawa Pond, Gango-ji and Naramachi with the temple admission included.
Naramachi Museum is a different stop
The private Naramachi Museum has old shop signs, art, folk objects and Buddhist figures. Entry is free, with published hours of 10:00 to 16:00 and irregular closing days. Keep its name separate from Koshi-no-ie when making a plan: a collection of objects and a reconstructed house answer different questions about local life, even if both fit a merchant-district walk.
The museum’s notice of 21 October 2026 announces opening from 23 October to 9 November 2026. That announcement ends on 9 November and should not be stretched into an everyday opening promise for the following weeks. A separate notice dated 28 May 2026 requires reservations for groups and schools. Individual travellers can keep a flexible route, with time to enjoy the streets as well as the collections.
Art, exhibitions and woodcraft
The dated exhibition programme includes “dogs” from 2 to 14 November 2026, moving cardboard art from 1 to 30 November 2026, and “心の絵2026” from 2 October to 30 November 2026. Each has its own end date. Choose the exhibition that fits the actual travel date rather than expecting all the listed subjects to remain on display throughout a later visit.
A separate chopstick-making experience offers wood selection, the making activity, finished chopsticks and wrapping. Its listed duration is 45 minutes, starting about two minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara. Some wood choices carry a paid upgrade. This is a practical craft activity, distinct from admission to a museum; choose it if making an object matters more to you than adding another collection stop.
Gango-ji, cafés and a guided district route
The three-hour walking route selected for this page starts at Kintetsu Nara Station, Higashimuki Nakamachi 29, and links Sarusawa Pond, Gango-ji and Naramachi with the park. Gango-ji admission is included, while travel to and from the meeting point, meals and drinks are extra. That makes it a useful choice for combining street context with a temple visit. Compare it with the broader walking tours before choosing your day’s main activity.
Cafés and sweet shops can supply a pause during independent exploration. Decide according to what is open when you pass rather than assuming every shop keeps the same daily hours. For a visit built around included tastings, use the separate food and sake guide. Keep residential entrances clear, respect photography signs and take rubbish away; a district walk takes place among buildings that continue to have everyday uses.
